What is PBIS?

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a proven approach that helps all students thrive socially, emotionally, and academically. Instead of simply punishing misbehavior, PBIS proactively teaches and rewards positive actions to create a safe, fair, and supportive school environment.

PBIS in Yolo County

The Yolo County Office of Education's PBIS initiative is currently focused on sustainability and continuous improvement. Since 2018, Yolo County districts and YCOE have collaborated to help schools create positive, predictable, and culturally responsive environments for every student. The focus has been on building two core levels of support:

Tier 1 (Universal Systems): Foundational systems, data, and practices designed to proactively support all students across the entire school.
Tier 2 (Targeted Interventions): Extra, customized support for students who demonstrate challenging behaviors and need more targeted help building skills than Tier 1 alone provides.

How we support our districts

To ensure these multi-tiered systems create lasting change, YCOE provides hands-on, customized implementation support to local school districts. We partner with schools in two main ways:

Collaborative planning: We work side by side with district partners during strategic co-design sessions to develop tailored professional learning schedules, set yearly behavior goals, and build systems to track student data effectively.
On-the-ground coaching: To bridge the gap between training and real-world practice, YCOE staff join district leadership teams directly. By serving as active coaches and community partners, we provide the personalized guidance essential for anchoring PBIS deeply into each school's unique culture.
