CalFresh Impacts and Local Food Assistance Resources

We want to share important information regarding the impact of the ongoing federal government shutdown on families who rely on CalFresh food benefits. Many Yolo County residents are already experiencing delays in receiving assistance, and this may affect students and families we serve across our programs.

Below is a summary of the current situation, what Yolo County and YCOE are doing in response, and how to connect families with food resources in our community.

About the Situation

Due to the federal shutdown, no new CalFresh benefits were loaded onto EBT cards as of November 1. Families who rely on CalFresh will not receive benefits until there is a budget agreement at the federal level.

In Yolo County, approximately 27,600 people are enrolled in CalFresh, including about 7,000 children ages 0–17. The average participant receives $301 per month in CalFresh benefits.

If you or any students or families need immediate food assistance, please visit the Yolo Food Bank to find local distribution sites or call 2-1-1 Yolo 211 for referrals to nearby resources.

What is the County Doing?

Yolo County is proactively coordinating a countywide response to the expected delay in CalFresh benefits resulting from the ongoing federal government shutdown. Efforts are focused on expanding access to food and essential resources for affected residents.

The Yolo Food Bank is providing emergency food distributions at the Yolo County Service Centers in Woodland and West Sacramento to directly support CalFresh recipients. Two emergency distributions have already taken place, with two additional events scheduled for November 12 and 13. View the “Food First” distribution schedule by city or region here.

In addition to emergency distributions, the Yolo Food Bank continues operating nearly 60 regular community food distributions throughout the county. For November, grocery quantities are being increased by 20% at each site to ensure individuals and families have consistent access to food.
