The Early Learning Summit will be focused on how leaders in Yolo County can support families with children from preschool to 3rd grade. Yolo County is creating a Roadmap to the Future for children 0-5 and we want you to join us! 

Participants will:

  • Hear from early childhood and early learning experts in the state.
  • Learn more about the direct needs of families for early care and education in Yolo County, including Universal Pre-Kindergarten.
  • Discuss strategies to advance early learning and care in Yolo County with other community members.

Who should attend? Everyone is invited to attend this free summit. The summit is designed for community leaders and educators who directly serve children 0-5 in Yolo County. This includes district administrators, principals, kindergarten and transitional kindergarten teachers, and service providers.

SUMMIT Speakers

Stephen PropheterStephen Propheter is the Director of the Early Education Division (EED) at the California Department of Education. He was appointed by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond in 2019. The EED provides leadership and support to California's early education community, providers, and contractors, ensuring high-quality early education programs are provided to children ages birth to 13 years. In this role, Propheter oversees investments for universal prekindergarten programs including California State Preschool and Transitional Kindergarten. 

Jacob HibelDr. Jacob Hibel is an Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of California, Davis. He also serves as Co-Director of the Center for Poverty and Inequality Research and Director of the California Public Education Policy Analysis Lab. His research focuses on the sources and consequences of social inequalities from infancy through adolescence, particularly those related to education. Much of Jacob Hibel’s current research focuses on large-scale immigration's consequences for children, schools, and communities. He completed his doctoral degree in Sociology and Demography from Pennsylvania State University

Patti HerreraDr. Patti Herrera is Vice President at School Services of California. She serves school districts by advocating for public policies that maintain and advance the interests of Pre-Kindergarten and community college students. She previously led the Governmental Relations Division as the Chief Governmental Relations Officer for the Riverside County Superintendent of Schools. She has worked to develop relationships with key policymakers and staff in and around the State Capitol. Dr. Herrera completed her bachelor's and doctoral degrees at the University of California, Davis.

Alta California Regional CenterDiane Williams is a Client Services Manager with Alta California Regional Center’s Early Start Program. Diane has worked at the Regional Center for 19 years with experience as a service coordinator and a manager. Alta California Regional Center offices serve over 20,000 clients across ten counties, including Yolo County. The Early Start Program provides services and supports for children within the context of their family. Families are coached to help their child learn during everyday activities and routines, referred to as early intervention. In Yolo County, the Early Start Program has an office in Woodland on West Court St.

Garth LewisGarth Lewis serves as the Yolo County Superintendent of Schools.  He was elected to his first term as the county's 19th superintendent in 2018 and was re-elected to his second term in 2022. He is the first African-American to be elected as county superintendent in Yolo County. Lewis has served as an educator in Yolo County for 19 years and has a 27-year career in K-12 education.
