HISTORY OF THE YOLO YOUTH COMMISSION

HISTORY OF THE YOLO YOUTH COMMISSION

In May 2022, the Yolo County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to establish the Yolo Youth Commission as a two-year pilot program and authorized the Yolo County Office of Education (YCOE) to administer the program. The pilot is being funded by county cannabis tax revenue with additional grant funding from the Martin Luther King Jr. Freedom Center.

In November 2022, the Board of Supervisors approved 15 youth commissions (3 youth per supervisorial district) to be seated.

With about 25% of the county’s population under the age of 18, the Yolo Youth Commission creates a permanent pathway for young people to shape their future and build community in Yolo County. Nothing for YOUth without YOUth!

MISSION
To enhance the quality of support, services, and programs for youth through working with local leaders to make funding decisions to make a positive impact on youth development and empowerment for all.

WHAT WE DO
  • Commissions are an active part in our local government and will hold meetings monthly to understand the existing efforts to support youth and determine what needs of youth may not be met or need support in.
  • Issue a yearly request for grant funding proposals from youth-centered efforts or youth organizations
  • Review and evaluate proposals to present to the BOS to support Yolo County youth services, programs, and organizations with funding opportunities.
  • Conduct studies and advise on other proposals and programs as requested by the BOS and lead their own interests through studies on youth needs and development.

ELIGIBILITY
Youth who are between the ages of 13-18 and reside in Yolo County are welcome to apply. At the time of appointment, commissioners shall be no younger than 13 and no older than 18 years of age.

Applications are now closed for the Yolo Youth Commission! The next application period will open in late 2023. If you have questions about eligibility or how to apply, contact Annissa Iniguez, Administrative Assistant, Equity and Support Services, at annisa.iniguez@ycoe.org or (530) 669-3772.
