Region 3 Service-Learning Network, Yolo County Office of Education

This Institute is designed to help support middle school teachers, high school teachers and higher education faculty as they develop and implement STEM-based service-learning (S-L) projects. Institute participants will receive a $750 stipend and will join a STEM S-L Project Team composed of higher education students and/or faculty, and relevant business, agency or community partners. The Team will implement a service-learning project during the 2009-10 school year that will identify and meet a community need. Possible service areas include issues and needs related to the environment and energy, disability access and meeting human needs.
STEM service-learning Project Teams can be interdisciplinary and intergenerational, where secondary school and higher education students and/or faculty work together on a service-learning project. STEM industry boomers and working professionals will serve as mentors and advisors.
Teams will be supported by a STEM S-L Coach who will identify resources and provide technical support to the team.
Elements of high quality service learning projects,
- Recruitment & retention of underrepresented youth in STEM coursework and careers,
- STEM project management,
- Building and sustaining school community partnerships and,
- Evaluation & assessment.
