| Foster
Youth Services (FYS) |
|

- Group
Home Support
|
Support is
provided to group homes by
providing referrals and
resources, assisting in school
placement, and developing
and maintaining
"Health and Education
Passports". |
- Health
and Education Records
|
Health
and education records necessary
to enroll students in school
will be tracked down.
A history of school attended,
transcripts, health histories,
and special education information
will be maintained in a database. |
- Independent
Living Skills Training
|
Most
foster youth are "on
their own" at age 18.
The Foster Youth
Education Advocate will collaborate
with Yolo County Independent
Living Program (ILP) to prepare
older foster youth for independent
living by teaching self-sufficiency
skills, providing job referral,
and job placement services,
referring students to ROP
programs, developing school
completion plans and job readiness
assessments.
For
more information on Yolo County
ILP contact Robyn Brown at
(530) 666-8245. |
- School
Placement Support
|
Because
foster youth are highly mobile,
they usually "start from
scratch" every time they
are enrolled in a new school.
They are repeatedly re-immunized
and re-tested. Often
they must remain out of school
for weeks until this process
is completed. Foster
Youth Services professionals
have the authority and expertise
to track down "lost"
transcripts and assessments
and verify that immunizations
are current so that the foster
youth can be admitted to school
and placed into the right
program promptly. |
- Tutoring
|
80%
of foster youth have been
retained one year by the third
grade and 75% are working
below grade level. The
Foster Youth Education Advocate
will coordinate the provision
of any academic tutorial services
as needed. If these
services are available at
the school site they will
be provided by the school
site; if not, the education
advocate will facilitate the
provision of school or home
based tutorial services.
These services will be provided
by college students and will
be funded through the program.
Detailed records of tutoring
time and progress will be
maintained by the tutor and
reviewed regularly by the
advocate. |
- Vocational
Training
|
The Foster
Youth Education Advocate will
refer foster youth to vocational
training programs offered
in the community, ROP programs,
and at community colleges. |
For
more information on Foster Youth Services
contact Jessica Larsen at jessica.larsen@ycoe.org
or call (530) 668-3791.
